Turkey remains on top among tourist destinations for Russian citizens in 2018.
Turkey has been a firm favourite among Russian tourists for several years, and after its return to market following the crisis in 2016, it’s back on top.
Over the first six months of 2018, 2.3 million Russian tourists visited Turkey, this is an increase of 40% compared to the same period in 2017. The number of Russian tourists travelling to Turkey is so large that the country also serves as Turkey’s no.1 inbound source market.
In 2017, Turkey saw a five-fold increase in Russian visitors, totalling 4.72 million visits. In 2018, expectations are that this number will reach 6 million.
The increase is not just Turkey taking a larger share of the market, the Russian outbound market is growing rapidly. In 2017, it rose 25% and continues to rise in 2018, with 9% more Russians travelling abroad from January – June 2018, according to the Russian State Statistics Service Rosstat.
Russian tourist spend in Turkey is also on the rise. During the crisis, it fell from around $320 USD per person to $230, but in the first half of 2018 spending is back up to $300, according to Erkan Yaggi, Head of the Mediterranean Association of Hoteliers and Hotel Managers.
With such positive statistics, more growth is on the horizon.
