Destination focus: Kyrgyzstan

Kyrgyzstan is the ultimate playground for hikers, alpinists, and those looking to experience an ancient way of life. It is packed with unspoiled mountainscapes, hospitable locals, and a strong nomadic culture.

Gulmira Myrzakmat from Discover Kyrgyzstan tells us why the Central Asian destination is the ideal place to reconnect with nature and discover an enchanting culture.

What brings you back to EMITT in 2018 and what are you looking to promote?
This is the second time Discover Kyrgyzstan is participating in EMITT with the support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Last year, we had a successful show, attracting the attention of Turkish and other international buyers, and we received an award for the most authentic stand.
Each year, the number of Turkish tourists coming to Kyrgyzstan grows, so EMITT is one of our top priority exhibitions. EMITT is one of the biggest meeting points for the tourism industry not only in Turkey but also many other countries from Europe, Middle East, and Asia.
It is a perfect international platform to promote Kyrgyzstan as a travel destination with its unique nomadic culture, authentic traditions, pristine nature, and hospitable people.

What are the key geographical markets you are focusing on?
Kyrgyzstan has a unique mixture of offerings that attract every kind of tourist starting from fearless alpinists to history and culture enthusiasts from all over the world. Furthermore, in recent years our team has been working on a vast marketing campaign aimed to attract tourists from Turkey, Germany, UK, Netherlands, France, US, Canada, as well as Asian countries and the Middle East.

What tourism products are you offering for 2018?
The World Nomad Games, a major tourist event, will take place in September 2018. Founded in 2014, the World Nomad Games are held every 2 years on the shores of Lake Issy-Kul and celebrate the great traditions of nomadic people across the world. It is a unique chance to see traditional wrestling, kok boru, hunting with birds of prey, and complex board games that make chess or mahjong look simple.
In addition, we have been working on developing new walking and gastro tours, where tourists can taste not only Kyrgyz food but also the traditional food of every nation living in Kyrgyzstan. Tourists will be able to enjoy new biking and trekking trails as well as active tourism products like eagle hunting and yurt building. Not to mention Kyrgyzstan’s not-to-be-missed activity – yurt camping.

What differentiates Kyrgyzstan from other destinations?
Kyrgyzstan’s authentic culture, nomadic lifestyle, and pristine nature really makes it stand out. It’s also very easy to travel to Kyrgyzstan after the introduction of visa free regimes for over 60 countries since 2011.

What are the most popular attractions in Kyrgyzstan?
The majority of tourists coming to Kyrgyzstan are interested in hiking and trekking. There are many opportunities to do mountaineering and alpinism in the Tien Shan Gorge. Cultural activities as eagle hunting, yurt building, horse riding and nomadic cooking classes are also very popular among tourists.
